Old wisdom isn’t necessarily bad wisdom

I’m a pretty staunch believer in a few of the old proverbial wisdoms. These little gems tend to ring true for me:

1. He without sin may cast the first stone.

2. To thine own self be true.

3. Fuck ’em if they cant take a joke.

  1. Well one and two just happen to be my mainstays too………though I couch one as do as you would be done by. Three, that’s so important I might have to adopt it.

  2. Ah, numero uno – that judgment thingie. I’d like to give every human being a T shirt with THAT embroidered on it. I like the other 2 BTW, too.

  3. I think we should reinterpretation sins. Can eating meat on a Friday still be valid? Would signing someone up to receive email spam be considered a sin?

The third one is my personal mantra.

  4. A big one for me is: Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

I think we would have a hell of a lot fewer problems if more people did that.

  5. Robin- Heh, I kinda grinned when you said you had a t-shirt with that embroidered on it. That made me picture a beautiful, pastel shirt with hand-crafted stitchwork, flourishes and maybe even flowers and in the center of this beautiful garment the words scripted:”Fuck ’em if they can’t take a joke.”

    The contrast tickled my funnybone.

jo, slothboy, ybones, you all had the same idea there. The Golden Rule is valuable but not always consistent. For instance, I wouldn’t mind a pie in the face…. as long as it was well-baked and some form of chocolate.

Bo- Yes! Numero uno… that’s probably my favorite story in the bible, one of my favorite stories of all time. I remember really thinking about it as a teenager and giving Jesus not just the reverential respect demanded by authority figures but honest to gosh peer respect. What an awesome way to solve a situation that seemed beyond hope.

Stevo- Definitely: whomever designed modern c.d. wrappers should be punished to the full extent of the law.

aefiel- Even if you did, if I know you, you’d throw butterflies. :)

    Vald- isn’t it?

    Mad- wasn’t he?

  6. I was going to leave you with your mental picture, but it’s so close I had to comment. It’s a pastel yellow t-shirt. No flowers or flourishes. But “Fuck ’em if they can’t take a joke” is beautifully embroidered in calligraphy on the pocket of the t-shirt. It’s so tastefully done that it can be hard to read at first because it isn’t expected. ;)
