Oscar Contest; I totally almost forgot

Okay, the Academy Awards are on tonight, and I totally almost forgot. Let’s see whose psychic or a lucky bastard. I’ll give a prize equal to the value of 2.5 paperclips to the person who ends up getting the most of these top 6 (plus 1 rogue) categories correct.

I’d tell you what the prize is, but that would compromise the integrity of the contest, since no one would likely want it, and might botch their picks just to avoid getting it. Here are the categories and the contestants, just throw your picks down in the comments section.

Observations:

I won’t boast. Yes I will, I so nailed it about the Jack thing. The musical numbers tend to be a little grating, but I think Amy Adams did a fantastic job, getting up there all by herself in front of all those famous faces. She did just as good a singing job live as her character in the movie (Si dragged me to Enchanted.) I wish they had used Amy Adams instead of Kristin Chenowith for the ‘That’s How You Know’ number. Chenowith lacked energy, and it was noticeable.

There have been some surprises in the main categories for sure. Jon Stewart is going for understated again, and this seems to work pretty well. A few jokes have fallen a bit flat, but for the most part he’s pitch perfect. Okay, I’m pretty glad the song ‘Falling Slowly’ won, even though ‘That’s How You Know’ was a really fun number in the princess movie. The awards have been pretty evenly distributed, no sweeps this year… but Bourne Ultimatum is cleaning up for the technical crap.

Tilda Swinton has given the best acceptance speech by far. The movie montages are relentless. They come hard and fast and stretch on for sentimental mile upon mile. Three hours and 22 minutes… They kept it under the length of a Harry Potter movie. Not too bad.

    5. Philip Seymour Hoffman
    6. Cate Blanchett
    7. Ratatouille

  3. 1.There Will Be Blood

    3. Viggo Mortenson
    4. Ellen Page
    5. Javier Bardem
    6. Amy Ryan
    7. The Bourne Ultimatum

    Decided to go a just little dark horse here. I still say Paul Dano should have got a supporting actor nomination for There Will Be Blood. Lewis just chewed scenery and acted like he always does.

  4. Having not see One Single Movie from the entire list, this truly is a Shot In The Dark!

    1. No Country for Old Men
    2. Juno
    3. George Clooney
    4. Cate Blanchett
    5. Javier Bardem
    6. Saoirsee Ronan
    7. 3:10 to Yuma

    All I will say is that some of this is based on the what I heard from my friend who is a HUGE movie buff and used to write reviews for our local paper. She hated There Will Be Blood and thought DDL was just playing the same role he’s played every other time. So even though he is the presumptive favorite, I went for a long shot on that one.

  5. 1. Atonement
    2. Diving Bell and Butterfly
    3. Daniel Day Lewis
    4. Julie Christie
    5. Hal Holbrook
    6. Ruby Dee
    7. 3:10 to Yuma

    I have seen none, so should have a great chance of winning the –what was that?

  6. 1. No Country for Old Men
    2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    3. Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd
    4. Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose
    5. Hal Holbrook for Into the Wild
    6. Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton
    7. 3:10 to Yuma

  7. Okay, I’ll play although I don’t know why. I haven’t seen any of the movies nominated this year but I have seen two of the movies which produced best actor/actress nominees so here’s my guesses:

    1.Michael Clayton
    2.No Country For Old Men
    3. Tommy Lee Jones (this is one of the two I saw and I just watched Coal Miner’s Daughter last night so I am thinking he is a helluvan actor.
    4. Laura Linney (this is the other one I saw)
    5. Hal Holbrook (mostly because he’s such an old timer)
    6. Saoirsee Ronan (Oh yeah, I forgot I saw this one too. Truly a forgettable movie!)
    7.Ratatouille (just because)

  8. My picks (and I am really torn because Atonement is one of my favourite books by one of my favourite writers and the film was bloody fantastic (even though I cannot stand Kiera Knightley) but I loved No Country for Old Men too and am a huge Coen bros fan so I don’t know…..

    okay:

    1. Atonement
    2. No Country
    3. D D Lewis (I haven’t seen film yet, going this weekend but he is best around just about so)…and I’m sorry Johnny freakin Depp and nothing for James McAvoy?
    4. Julie Christie
    5. Javier Bardem
    6. Cate Blanchett
    7. The Bourne Ultimatum (i have no clue on such things, a total guess)

  9. I wanna play! However, I haven’t seen a single one of these movies, so I probably can’t. Ooh, except for “I’m Not There,” so I’ll go for Cate Blanchett for category #6.

  10. Our town ‘theater’ plays “The Dukes of Hazzard” every Tuesday and Thursday night, with a Saturday matinee, so I haven’t seen any of the films. I do, however, admire the way ‘Tilda Swinton’ clears the mouth when uttered, so I’ll root for her, the poor girl probably suffered much abuse as a young girl after being born Matilda. Her parents should be rudely chastized, unless, of course, they’re Australian and met while dancing to ‘Waltzing Matilda’, then I suppose I could possibly forgive them if they were inclined to send me a written apology… and a check.

  11. I’m “and also”?? LOL! I see my partner is “to play.” Makes sense, both of ’em, in some odd sort of way.

    I haven’t seen any of the movies so here’s a completely random guess:

    1. There Will Be Blood
    2. The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
    3. Daniel Day Lewis
    4. Ellen Page
    5. Javier Bardem
    6. Ruby Dee
    7. Transformers

    Seriously, that’s an uninformed vote.

  12. Heya Robin, you’ll probably win ’em all. The links were utterly completely random, I was just linking the whole paragraph. 2 minutes till red carpet kick off! Yay! Good luck!

  13. And my answers are:

    1. Best Picture: There Will Be Blood;
    2. Direction: Diving Bell;
    3. Actor: George Clooney;
    4. Actress: Julie Christie;
    5. Supporting Actor: Hal Holbrook;
    6. Supporting Actress: Saoirsee Ronan;
    7. Sound/Mixing: No Country for Old Men

  14. Sweet, still time to enter your choices, right up till they announce the first one. I’m trying to resist the urge to edit my picks, based on what the A-listers are wearing in the pre-show.

  16. I won, I won; just call me madame seer! And I am so pleased that those Coen brothers did so so well…….they are the bestest directors ever, yippee! Shame about Atonement but No Country is fabulous. Now do I get to wear my slinky black dress and heels?

  17. Oops! I was away from the internet and didn’t get to participate!

  18. jaynova- Yes. It is indeed shocking and disappointing, this penchant you seem to maintain for ‘real life’. What the hell happened to you? Did your parents not park you in front of the television for long stretches of your youth? When you slip the matrix, you make the rest of us question our digitally enhanced sense of contentment. For shame.
