Panda porn and other tidbits

I was looking around wordpress a little and found this:

Gay Penguin Ruins Kids Lives

It’s a sufficiently facetious entry, I think, to allow the reader to come to their own conclusion about the stupidity of knee-jerk reactionaries. Oops… I might have editorialized there a bit.

I always find it both tragic and amusing that artists/authors/etc. who try and introduce children to the concepts of compassion and understanding inevitably fail because of the small but potent band of grown-ups ever present to denounce the act of understanding differences as ‘brainwash’, and the messengers of such ideas as ‘evil’. Life in a fear based society.

But back to the topic of the story: Gay penguins. a few of the commenters on that thread were a little mistaken as to the nature of… nature. One commenter had this to say:

“They should teach in school that homosexuality does not happen in nature. Animals don’t [swing] that way ! LOL. Try doin it with a male bear, see what happens, report back!”

That’s a funny comment but it’s also patently inaccurate, and sort of promotes the human-centric, fear based attitude that homosexuality is an abomination, a willfully selected behavior of sin. I’m not going to even start in on how religion seems to fuck people up this way. I believe in God, but when you give such a reactive group like humans an institution with guidelines, they’ll start interpreting it all to hell, ignore the basic tenets like what Jesus did and said, forget the love and forgive parts, and start killing each other willy nilly in the name of God.

(Don’t you like how I always say “I’m not even gonna get into…” and then get into it?)

Allegedly, people who condemn homosexuality, do so because it is ‘evil’ or deviant behavior, and it goes against their religious upbringing. Therefore, as fine, upstanding Christians they taunt, exclude, vilify, shun, destroy the property and sometimes physically assault their brothers and sisters in Christ. So homosexuality is viewed as a dangerous behavior that could undo the fine tapestry of society, whereas the behavior of these righteous folks… well: Thank goodness they’re safeguarding ‘civilization’ for all of us. Wouldn’t you love to live in the community prescribed by their actions?

Christian was my choice of term, but I’m not inferring that Christians behave this way. Many Christians are open, caring, compassionate people who strive to understand others in accord with the teachings of Jesus. It’s always that same, small, ever present group of reactionaries, and ‘Christianity’ is just one of the banners they wear to shroud fear and prejudice.

I wanted to talk about panda porn, and this has gotten way off track. I guess these were some thoughts that wanted saying.

So homosexuality in nature: Yup. It’s a very present element of the birds and the bees, and it’s been around since long before bipedal hominids were here to denounce it.

I know Wikipedia isn’t the gospel, but the impressive reference and resource list should provide a thorough background for descriptions of homosexuality in nature, enough even for the skeptics among you. Have at it.

K, that’s all I really wanted to… oh, you’re probably still wondering about panda porn. Or maybe you’re not. But I should probably give some tribute to the title of this post, so here you go: A tribute to all the panda procreation specialists out there. You’re doing God’s work, people. True story. Ask any creature trying to maintain their species on bamboo.

  1. I find it odd that many Christians still seem to think that we can somehow force purity on to people, forgetting the fact that it was God himself who created free will and if a heart isn’t given freely, well, what is the value?
Wow. Horny Pandas. One thing I didn’t picture myself seeing when I got up this morning.

  2. Well you won’t get any argument from me……..nothing wrong with homosexuality, perfectly natural. I’m not religious, though I was brought up RC. Nowadays I just try to be ethical, but strikes me that an awful lot of Christianity is a loooooooong way from what JC preached.

Loved the panda porn clip, loved it.

  3. johemmant – you got that right – a LONG ways away!!

Go ahead and get into it – I happen to agree with your reactions completely. Oh, and the panda porn was the cherry on top (oooog, did I just type that?!)

  4. I feel sorry for people like that. They miss out on a lot of the good things in life by being so focused on finding something bad/evil.

Maybe they need more panda porn in their lives.

  5. I should have figured that Mike Birbiglia (aka Mike Brigglesby on the Bob & Tom Show) did Panda Porn. He’s funny as hell. But I digress…

You’re correct, of course, about the bastardization of American concepts of Christianity. I mean, certain as Christians are of going to Heaven, why are they so paranoid about the human condition and their relationship to it? With all their ‘do unto others as yada yada yada’ crapola, it seems that now that, too, has become ‘do unto others before they do unto you’. Poor, oppressed souls… everyone’s out to get them!

  6. I always start one of these discussions by saying “I’m not a Biblical scholar” because I don’t want to represent my ideas as Gospel Truth (Trademark 0000AD) so insert that here.

A lot of my more antagonsitic Christian brethren like to paraphrase the Bible. “The Bible says Homosexuality is bad.” Ok, maybe it does. Where does it say that? Chances are they can’t tell you. Those who are well versed can point you to a few scriptures, most in the Old Testament that point out that being with another man “as with a woman” is bad. The Old Testament is a tricky thing for Christians, especially in terms of The Law. If we are going to follow the written letter of the Old Testament Law then we also need to quit eating meat on Fridays. That’s the thing, people pick and choose stuff that bugs them personally and give it more weight than other things.

The New Testament does specifically mention it as naughty, Romans has the most direct statement: “God has given [people who worship false gods] up to shameful passions. Their women have exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and their men in turn, giving up natural relations with women burn with lust for one another; males behave indecently with males and paid in their own persons the fitting wage of such perversion.”

That makes it sound like its bad. So let’s assume, just for the sake of simplicity, that God does really consider homosexual sex to be sinful. (Seriously, just bear with me for a second.) So now what? Every gay person goes to hell right? Uh, WRONG. You know what gets a lot more coverage in the Bible than homosexuality? Adultery, Theft, Dishonest Dealings, Blasphemy, False Idols, Murder, Tons of stuff. Tons of SINS. We are humans. We do bad shit, that’s how we roll. That’s the whole point of Christ.

All sins are hell worthy. There are no small sins:

“Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law” (Gal. 3:10).
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it” (2:10; see also Matt. 5:18-19).

Without forgiveness we are in serious afterlife jeopardy. Christ died to unlock our access to forgiveness. You still have to ask for it, and it is pretty clear that you have to love God and love Jesus, but the message is still one of hope. Protesting Christians focus on Homosexuality because it is a hot issue, but they are missing the point overall. I think the sin of Adultery is putting a lot more people on God’s shit list than homosexuality, but it doesn’t get as much media coverage when you protest it.

Since we are all sinners, and sinners are allowed to be Christians, I don’t see why homosexuals can’t be Christians. I think it might be spiritually dangerous but I think that God takes a lot of things into account when you go to final judgment. Again, I know Christians who are living together (and having S-E-X) and aren’t married and are thus guilty of Adultery, but I don’t see them being singled out for good old fashioned righteous anger.

Catholics will not agree with me. (They have some kind of Air-miles-esque points system or some crap for sin forgiveness. Confess to a priest, do seven hail Mary’s, light a candle and shoot six free throws.) Hell, my wife doesn’t agree with me. My gut reaction though is that even if it is a sin, it isn’t somehow worse than other sins and should be treated in the same manner, with love and forgiveness.

  7. Haha, panda porn, I was just reading today that the zookeepers are showing them porn in an attempt to inspire reluctant pandas, but and I quote, “the pandas are more interested in eating than watching the screen.” Pandas are so cool. As for homosexuality, as you point out it’s all over the animal world and what Christians think is generally not worth noting, their religeon makes no sense, why should their thoughts on anything else be expected to.

  8. I rarely click on the video and watch. Tonight I did. It was funny. I’m glad I clicked on it.

I think the largest group of Christians, the Catholics, are also the largest group that spread the hate of and toward homosexuals. That’s one big reason I have such a strong distaste for Catholicism. It’s not wrong. It’s not bad. It’s not evil. It just isn’t.

  9. I know Christians tend to get a lot of flack over the views some of them have of homosexuality, but really, even the worse Christians are nothing compared to members of some other religions. For example, I think you could safely say that the vast majority of Christians, regardless of how much they might disagree with homosexuality, don’t think homosexuals should actually be killed or imprisoned because of their sexuality.

I’ve had three Muslims tell me, on a forum completely unrelated to religion, politics or homosexuality (in other words, the kind of place where they’re very unlikely to find supporters of this kind of opinion) that homosexuals should all be executed. They felt strongly enough about it to bring it up in an otherwise very light-hearted place, and seemed completely unabashed about the whole thing.

So give Christians a break, people!
